Author Interview

What motivated you to write The Charm Offensive?

We moved often when I was a child because of my father’s job and now with my husband, we’ve continued to relocate around the country. I’ve been fortunate to live in both small towns and big cities and I’ve discovered there’s something to love about each place we’ve lived. There are so many wonderful romance series set in small towns and I wanted to write a series about characters who live and work in a big, vibrant city. San Francisco has always been one of my favorite cities and when the idea for The Charm Offensive came up, the City by the Bay seemed like the perfect setting.

What do you hope readers take with them after they’ve read it?

I’d like readers to finish The Charm Offensive and walk away believing that true love is real. While love might not happen according to our own plans or timelines or come wrapped up with a bow, it’s worth fighting for.

Do you have a favorite scene that you can share with us?

One of my favorite scenes includes my heroine, Sophie Callahan, her nine-year old niece, Ella and the hero, Brad Harrington. Sophie and Ella have started a new dinner tradition called, Sunday-night Surprise. Brad has been invited to join them much to Sophie’s chagrin. Sunday-night Surprise hasn’t been the success that Sophie had envisioned, but she’s determined to keep trying. Here’s a teaser. You’ll have to read more in The Charm Offensive to see how this Sunday-night Surprise worked out.

Sophie glanced over at Brad. “Sunday-night surprise works like this. The chooser picks a protein from the piglet teapot. Then a cuisine style from the cow teapot.” Sophie pulled a colored cardboard piece from each teapot. “We’ve got French cuisine and fish as our protein. We can work with this. Now comes the surprise part.” Sophie sorted through the cookbooks and picked up French Food Made Simple.

The daring taste buds of the pair interested and surprised Brad. He appreciated their culinary spirit and how organized and efficient Sunday-night surprise was. When he was a kid, he’d wanted only burgers and French fries. Matt and Ruthie’s worry seemed unnecessary and overblown. He asked, “You make any recipe from that cookbook?”

“Not exactly.” Ella leaned her elbow on the table and rested her chin in her palm. “We make the recipe on the page number Aunty picks.”

“What if we don’t like that recipe?” Brad asked.

“You have your cell phone in easy reach, right?” Ella asked.

“Yes,” Brad said.

Ella grinned against her fingers. “Perfect. You might want to put The Boot Pizza into your contact list.”

“We’ve only called them twice.” Sophie gripped the cookbook like she was a harassed librarian ready to swat rowdy children with it.

“Last week was close,” Ella said. “We’ve called almost every time it’s been your turn, Auntie.”

“I haven’t had very good luck,” Sophie admitted.

Defeat eased into her tone and she looked like she wanted to smack her own forehead against the cookbook. Or cry. Brad wanted to bring back Sophie’s smile. Bring back Ella’s bright laughter. He should leave, but he wanted the experience he’d been promised: the surprise, the adventure and the food. Their execution needed a little refining, but he’d deal with that next Sunday. Not that there’d be a next anything. But there was tonight. Tonight, he’d stick to their plan.

If you could sum the book up in one sentence, what would you say?

This is a love story about two people who discover all they’ve ever needed can be found in the City by the Bay, if they can only learn to open their hearts.

What is something about you that is unique - maybe about how/where you write, favorite hobby... or favorite snack foods?

I don’t think I’m much different from other writers in that I write whenever and wherever I can and that might be in my car outside the pool while my daughter’s practice, on the bleachers at a weekend travel swim meet or in my home office (to include the porch or couch or kitchen counter so it’s more of a mobile home office). I carry a clipboard with me all over and I still find something freeing about writing with a pencil and paper, especially if I get stuck on a scene. I love to bake and I’ve been on a cheesecake run recently, trying out new homemade cheesecake recipes (If anyone wants to share their favorite recipes, please do – I love trying new recipes). I’d love to attend culinary school as I’ve a secret wish to be a chef or at least skilled enough to take five random ingredients and put together a tasty dinner without a recipe to guide me. Gelato is both a weakness and reward for meeting my writing goals. Now that I’ve finished this interview, I think I need a bite of the salted caramel gelato waiting in the freezer. (Does it matter that it’s only 9 am?)

Winning her over means winning everything

Sophie Callahan is PI Brad Harrington’s best lead to tracking down the man he’s been hired to bring to justice: Sophie’s own thieving father. But when Brad arrives at The Pampered Pooch, just behind a litter of stray kittens, the pet-store owner is the big surprise. This scrappy, huge-hearted woman with charm to spare gets to Brad in a way no one has ever been able to before. She spends her life finding—and making—homes for others: abandoned pets, her young niece. He’ll have to tell her why he’s really here. Which means he’ll have to choose between his sail-away dreams and the chance to build a forever home—with her.
